Lise Ellingsen
My work combines sculpture, video, animation, and installation to create surreal worlds where mythology, humor, and contemporary life intersect. Beginning with hand-built clay sculptures and drawings, I transform these forms into prints, animations, and immersive environments that blur the boundaries between the handmade and the digital. Inspired by Norse mythology, nature, and my experience as a Norwegian artist living in New York, I explore themes of identity, consumer culture, and our relationship with the natural world. During the Highland Open Studio Tour, visitors can experience works in progress alongside finished sculptures, limited-edition prints, and installations, offering a glimpse into both my creative process and the evolving worlds I create.
Lise Ellingsen (b. Oslo, Norway) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in New York. Her practice combines sculpture, video, performance, animation, and immersive installation to create surreal worlds inspired by autobiography, Norse mythology, humor, and popular culture, exploring identity, the relationship between humans and nature, and the tension between the sacred and the absurd. She has exhibited at venues including SPRING/BREAK Art Show, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, SPACE776, Scandinavia House, and Chashama, and has participated in residencies including the Wassaic Project, Fine Arts Work Center, Michael David Residency, and Small Projects. In 2026, she curated Villa Isis: A Nordic–New York Immersive Art Experience for Upstate Art Weekend, bringing together Nordic and New York artists and filmmakers in a multidisciplinary exhibition and public program. Before becoming a full-time artist, Ellingsen worked as an award-winning creative director and designer, with work recognized by the Art Directors Club and the Type Directors Club.
