Daniel Hauben

A painting is a journey of discovery.

Often disparate images coalesce to become my paintings; gleaned from the beauty of the world, and the convoluted ideas forever bouncing around in my heart and brain.

Painting allows me to distill my ideas, my thoughts, my visions, and to open a window, allowing others to see in, to them.

Painting centers me and helps me find my perspective, and my place in the world.

In my most concentrated moments, I lose myself entirely, and enter the painting as if entering a three-dimensional world. It is a world I can change with the very movement of my brush. Each stroke can push through, into another realm, can imbue the painting with light, make colors breathe, shapes dance, and new ideas come to life.

Daniel Hauben's lifelong artistic focus has been the landscape, and especially the urban landscape. He has had over 30 national and international solo exhibitions, including at the Bronx Museum, and the American Embassy in Berlin and has been awarded artistic residencies in Spain, Germany, Costa Rica, and at several art centers in the U.S.

His M.T.A. Arts for Transit commission "The EL", was acknowledged in 2008 as one of 40 notable works of public art nationwide by Americans for the Arts. In 2012, Mr. Hauben completed a commission of 22 paintings of The Bronx for the new Bronx Community College library (the largest public art commission in the Bronx in 60 years).

Mr. Hauben has taught at the Art Students League, the CUNY Graduate Center, and CCNY's Spitzer School of Architecture.

His work is in the collections of: The Bronx Museum, The Museum of the City of New York, New York Historical Society, Library of Congress, White House, and the New York Public Library.
